Realistic rendering in real time

The precision and quality treatment of graphics in Twinmotion2 facilitates a quality close to that of reality, thanks to the integrated physical effects that imitate the perception of the human eye.

The inclusion of such effects is driven by our desire to give architects the elements they need to realize a project.

These effects are:

- Global illumination
Real time indirect illumination of surfaces.

- Light sources
Real time direct illumination of surfaces.

- Eye adaptation
Physical characteristics of the eye like the adaptation of the retina to a scene. The pupil dilates to let in more light during the brusque change of luminosity in passing from an exterior to an interior space for example.

- HDR
A piece of white paper seen in shadow will not display the same hue as one seen in sunshine because the difference is supplementary to the RGB information. The intensity of light modifies the perception we have of color.

Light and shadow

The dynamic shadow system in Twinmotion®2 displays, in real-time, even the most complex of shadows with the utmost precision, with no calcuation limit.

Particular care has been taken with shadow and lighting effects because these elements are essential in architecture.

Shadow precision is different according to whether the camera is near or far away. This means the display of shadows is precise when close-up and credible when further away. Shadows also benefit from a blur adapted to the perception of the human eye.

Eye Adaptation simulates the reaction of the human eye to different light intensities as the camera is moved around.

Twinmotion®2 can intuitively set the quality of light and shadow, displaying the results immediately without the need for calculation time.

GPU + CPU Optimization

Twinmotion®2 has been developed to exploit current graphics cards more effectively, and to get the best from multi-core processors.

The software architecture of Twinmotion®2 has been optimized to get the best performance from your graphics card and central processing units with the aim, in turn, of offering optimal graphics, physics and audio performance.

Modelling Tools

Twinmotion®2 is the first complete real time studio.

However complex your architectural project might be, or the number of elements that it might hold, Twinmotion2 has a powerful intuitive tool for use at every stage.

Twinmotion®2 lets you create or import shapes which you can alter with a multitude of tools.

With Twinmotion©2 you’re in complete control, from the first stage of creation to the final render.

Twinmotion®2 has been created by architects for architects.

Every element adapts itself as a function of the environment and evolves in real time. For example, the user can constantly work at the height of a man to review the project and all the applied effects within.

Twinmotion®2 lets you place primitives on a grid and extrude them to create base architectural elements very quickly and intuitively. It’s easy to create a wall for example, because the shadows are calculated automatically.

The anchor is a very practical tool in Twinmotion®2; it lets you manipulate any point on an object in an intuitive way when you select one of its faces.

Internal clock and geographic coordinates

Internal clock

One of the major advances in Twinmotion®2 is that it is entirely based around «cyclical time».

All program functions are time-stamped, be it the sun, the moon, the sky, the passage of clouds, the color of the sky, the intensity of light, atmospheric pollution, fog ...

All of these elements are animated automatically according to the month, day, hour and year.

Geographic coordinates

The Sun appears differently everywhere and so it’s impact on architecture will be different according to the time and place.

Thanks to the «Geographic coordinates» function you can obtain the exact geographic position of the Sun in the sky relative to where your architectural structure will be. So the light and shadows will be correct.

This tool uses normal degrees, minutes and seconds. You can enter the longitude and latitude directly or use our city selector of preset world-wide locations.

Physics

Twinmotion®2 includes the PHYSICS engine by NVIDIA®, the highest performing technology of the moment.

In Twinmotion®2, Physics are automatically activated on all the elements that you create or import.

This means you can move around inside your project as a pedestrian. Users can ‘visit’ a building for example using the eye-level of an adult or child (in the case of a school for instance) to see everything as it is intended to be seen when the project is finally completed.

The physics engine in Twinmotion®2 has been specially designed to remain active during the modification of geometric shapes. As you modify your project the physics engine continually updates the results.

Interactions

In Twinmotion®2, interactions start or animate actions. You can choose to trigger these actions by clicking on a scene element, by pressing a key on your keyboard at a specific time or by programming an object collision.

All of these options are powerful and very simple to use.

You can also create spatial animation in your 3D interactive model with two types of trigger :

- Triggers started by an action.

- Teleport type triggers (to transport you somewhere else within the same or another scene).

Story-board

The Storyboard lets you create demonstration scenarios to review your project and present it to your clients.

In Twinmotion®2, it’s possible to save and categorize your fixed and moving cameras, to create a sequence of different points of view, in different places, and so to present your project in a consumable and streamlined fashion.

Sounds and music

The customizable sound system in Twinmotion®2 lets you create a realistic ambience for your projects.

In Twinmotion®2 , you place sounds in the form of spherical spaces. If the camera penetrates the zone defined by a sound sphere the chosen sound will play. Physical properties of the sound are respected, so the play volume is relative to the distance of the camera from the point of origin.

The sound can be played once or looped as many times as desired. It is totally modifiable and can even be made interactive.

Twinmotion®2 plays MP3 and Wave audio files, and includes 50 pre-defined sound clips, such as cityscape ambience.

Interface

Twinmotion®2 uses an intuitive interface made simple by a chronological approach to workflow.

It’s been engineered primarily to the needs of architects and all the settings are quickly available to hand.

All object properties are grouped together in the same panel to avoid wasted time searching for settings.

The majority of settings are in slider panels which let you immediately visualize the effect of modifications in your scene.

Scene-graph

The Scene-graph in Twinmotion®2 enables easy management of all your 3D data.

This data can be used to move and modify forms in respect of their colors, materials, animation etc.. and may be kept on display or hidden from view as desired.

Here the user keeps a customized structured overview of their project, which facilitates quick and simple views of very complex projects.

Real time project manipulation is at the heart of Twinmotion®2.

Materials

In Twinmotion®2 all materials and material effects are managed in real time.

Twinmotion®2 includes a library of preconfigured materials and features a turnball which shows a preview of flat and curved surfaces to let you review the optical effect.

Twinmotion®2 also uses the RAL gGmbH color reference palette to define architectural hues and tones.

2D effect

Tools found in the « 2D Effect » section are powerful image modifiers which let you adjust a visual render as if you were using a photo-editing package, except in 3D!

You can change the contrast, brightness, gamma, saturation, color, tone and hue.

Switch your scene to black and white in an instant; play with the colors, do whatever you want, and all in real time.

Animations

Twinmotion®2 lets you animate your scene in two different ways.

The first is traditional, temporal animation which you use with the aid of time markers.

The second, known as spatial animation, lets you animate a scene according to your position. Meaning the action occurs relative to your position in the scene.

A key strength of Twinmotion®2 is the ability to combine these two principles of animation to speed-up the pace of productivity as well as the quality of your work.

Vegetation

Twinmotion®2 lets you paint vegetation on any surface no matter what its nature or inclination. The paintbrush can place all types of vegetation in a random or orderly fashion.

An architect is usually focused on architecture, so object libraries containing vegetation are indispensable when looking to save time.

Twinmotion®2 includes a library of 104 different plants comprising of 60 different species, including houseplants, garden plants, urban and forest trees ...

Trees interact with the shadows and light which surround them. Twinmotion2 tree objects can also be set to have their leaves move as if in a breeze - to bring more realism to a scene.

Dynamic Ambiant Occlusion

« Ambient Occlusion » is a shadow effect that takes account of the light due to occlusion.

In short, this function simulates the behavior of real light.

It is the most important graphic effect because it increases the realism and depth of your scene.

Sunbeam

Sunbeam creates, like other physical effects in Twinmotion®2, a very distinct ambience.

Sunbeam is used to give greater prominence to a light source, even in high contrast environments between the light and dark.

This effect, little used in architecture, is however a great utility.

The effect of Sunbeam adds to the mood of a scene and in doing so truly brings your project to life.

Like all effects it is interactive and becomes a great study tool when used to impress upon a client your vision of a particular space.

Reflection

Twinmotion®2 manages two types of reflection.

Simulated reflections that give surfaces such as steel, varnished wood and glass a glossy or shiny look - which can be used without limitation.

Physically correct reflections calculated for water, mirrors or smooth tiled surfaces.

These effects considerably increase the quality of a scene by accentuating its realism.

Fog, mist and smog

A dynamic fog function, with adjustable density and color, is integrated in Twinmotion®2.

If you look at a photo taken with great depth of field you will note that distant colors become desaturated. This physical phenomenon, due to water vapor in the air, is imitated by Twinmotion®2 with the help of a desaturated atmospheric fog.

The fog may be animated and can be created in vertical or horizontal fashion.

This effect brings even more realism to a scene.

Depth of field

Twinmotion®2 manages the depth of field to bring even more realism to your HD images.

Depth of field brings a significant level of realism to your still images or video films.

However, at the moment, it is a little used effect in architectural renders, because of the significant increase in calculation time normally required.

Twinmotion®2 offers this high performance effect in real time. For instance , you can apply sharpness into the distance with a single click of the mouse.

The depth of field effect is entirely controlled with sliders.

High Dynamic Range

To the human eye, a piece of white paper seen in shadow will not appear to have the same hue as one seen in sunshine. Therefore the RGB spectrum is not sufficient to define a color because it lacks intensity information.

This intensity (High Dynamic Range or HDR) is the sensation of being dazzled and affects our retinas which force dilation so as to adapt to a very bright or very dark environment.

This effect, which is indispensable for realism, is integrated into Twinmotion®2 and works in real time, just like the human eye.

Water

Twinmotion®2 lets you create water surfaces in a single click.

Countless different types of water forms are possible: swimming pools, lakes, basins, fountains, rivers, sea etc...

The tool is simple to use and totally customizable : a layout becomes an animated surface of water subject to reflection, refraction, cast spectrum and shadows - instantly and in real time.

Import / Export

D shape import in Twinmotion®2 offers presets to cover the most popular design applications used in the architecture and manufacturing industries.

It took a whole year of testing to ensure that the preset import-export system in Twinmotion®2 could offer total compatibility with every translated file.

Twinmotion®2 entirely recalculates imported scenes, shapes, normals and face orientations; mathematically converting the entire model so that it is optimized for the graphics card ... although it will look unchanged to the user.

Twinmotion®2 lets you import and export your 3D scenes in FBX, DWG, 3DS, DXF, DAE, X and TMW the native file type of Twinmotion®2.

Twinmotion®2 can generate :

- HD images in TGA, BMP, JPG, PNG, DDS, HDR, PPM, DIB or PFM format.

- HD videos in AVI and WMV format as well as using codecs installed on your operating system (MOV, DIVX, XVID, Mpeg, TechSmith®, Sony®, Microsoft®, etc...).

- Interactive stand-alone models. Which are free to distribute without limitation.

Libraries and Paintbrush

Libraries

Twinmotion®2 also has a library of more than 460 preset elements: 34 vehicles, 55 exterior articles, 58 interior articles, 104 plants and trees, 105 materials, 55 sounds and 50 people/characters.

A well stocked library is essential, it’s a utility regularly demanded by users, and it’s broad composition means that historic sites as well as contemporary ones can be dressed as desired.

It’s very intuitive to use, just drag and drop the element from the library into your scene.

All library objects are subject to LOD technology (Level Of Detail): meaning that as the camera moves away from the object, fewer polygons are required to display it, this enables the simultaneous display of a vast number of objects in a scene.

Like all elements in Twinmotion®2 library objects can be animated.

Paintbrush

If you want to place a large number of identical elements, you can use the paintbrush to paint with your chosen library object.

This function lets you easily paint vegetation on a wall or floor for example, or replicate the same composition several times. Automatic detection pastes the object upon your chosen surface.

Each and every object is duplicated so as to use as few resources as possible. What’s more every object has an LOD (Level of Detail) which lets you paint without limitation.

Environment presets

Preset environments are predefined parameters that let you change the atmosphere of your project to give it the ambience of Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring.

These parameters alter the sky, Sun and clouds for an overall scene ambience. This lets you visualize your projects by season and can quickly change the mood of a scene with incredible realism.

Each of these predefined parameters can be modified to give you full control over the effect.

Stand-Alone

Twinmotion®2 enables the generation of 3D interactive stand-alone versions of your project.

These versions let you freely deploy and distribute your projects internally as well as to clients.

You can manage the degree of interactivity available to your recipients, from allowing simple navigation through your project to its modification.
